Civilian interviews are very different from military promotion boards. With the right preparation, your military background becomes your greatest asset.
Interview Preparation
Many veterans find civilian interviews daunting at first — the format, language and expectations are different to what you're used to. The good news is that with preparation, your military experience gives you compelling, real-world examples that civilian candidates simply cannot match.
The key is translating your experience into language that resonates with civilian employers — replacing military jargon with business terminology and framing your achievements in terms of outcomes and impact.
Most competency-based interviews use the STAR framework: Situation, Task, Action, Result. Prepare at least two STAR examples for each key competency listed in the job description.
Replace terms like "operational theatre", "ORBAT" and "J4" with civilian equivalents such as "project environment", "organisational structure" and "supply chain function".
Know the company's mission, values and recent news before you walk in. Civilian interviewers are impressed by candidates who understand their business context.
Top Tips
Research the role and organisation thoroughly. Prepare STAR examples. Plan your route and arrive early. Choose appropriate civilian attire.
Listen carefully to each question before answering. Use civilian language throughout. Ask considered questions at the end. Show enthusiasm for the role.
Send a brief thank-you email. Reflect on what went well and what you would do differently. Whether successful or not, every interview is valuable practice.
